Do Tasers work?
“Phasers on stun!” Capt. Kirk would yell on Star Trek, and right away you knew—he and his crew were tough, they meant business, they weren’t going to take any nonsense. But they also didn’t want to hurt anyone, if humanly possible. The Chandler Police Department is sending the same message by incorporating Tasers into their repertory of tools.

With proliferation of moms' clubs, every day can be Mother's Day
On my 2003 calendar, Mother’s Day shows up as Sunday, May 11. I can hardly wait. The kids promise breakfast in bed, and I’m hoping for something simple, like instant oatmeal. Last year’s Denver omelet begged a little less Denver and a little more time in the skillet, but it was proof positive that being a mom isn’t so bad, after all.

Authentic chiles add passion to Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is not, on the face of it, a particularly American holiday. On the face of it, it’s not much of a holiday at all. Yet this holiday is celebrated passionately in America, particularly along the border, where it has become a tribute to Mexican culture--the culture of an important and growing American demographic group.

Chandler's new smoking law will go into effect Oct. 1
You wouldn’t expect to find smoke in a library, much less the Chandler City Council chambers. But while the fumes of this controversy couldn’t be inhaled, they were clearly visible as smoke-free advocates, decked out in bright yellow shirts with slogans reading, “Smoke Free In ’03,” clashed with bar owners over a proposed Chandler smoking ban.

Struggling Aztecs still have shot at trip to state
Most high school varsity baseball teams that win only one game during the heart of region play typically don’t advance to state. Head coach Ron Davini’s Corona del Sol Aztecs will not only attempt to defy the odds next week upon entering the Central Region Tournament as the No. 4 seed, but they’ll also try to avert their first losing season since 1996 and just their 10th in school history.

Meet your neighbor: Mike Chamberlin
Competing sportscasters find harmony as musical duo

When most Valley TV viewers see Kyrene Corridor resident Mike Chamberlin, the first word that pops into their heads is probably “sports.” Much as this attests to his success as a local broadcaster—he’s covered sports for Channel 3 KTVK since 1988—it wasn’t the direction Chamberlin originally saw his career taking.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie

This modern day Cinderella story would have worked better if Lizzie’s character exhibited a little more small-town girl in the big city factor.
