May 3 update
What’s going on in your Kyrene District schools

Kyrene de las Brisas

Third grade teachers Sue Buckle/Matt Metcalf, Kathy Hawthorne and Katie Mudd's classrooms are being turned into the rainforest, ocean and tundra biomes.  Students are researching animals with the help of librarians Mary Lou Westley and Debora Rodriguez.  The classrooms have been turned into examples of these biomes and the students have made 3D models of their animals to inhabit the biomes.  During this study, they have not only learned about the animals interdependence on humans and other animals, but how to do research in the library.

Kyrene del Cielo

Cielo's 4th grade continued their study of Arizona with a trip to the Maricopa Agricultural Center.  This is a 2100 acre experimental farm that is an integral and essential part of the College of Agriculture at the University of Arizona in Tucson. The children were involved in a variety of centers that gave them an understanding of the important role agriculture plays in Arizona. One of these centers concentrated on water conservation in our state.  Another center was about the food pyramid and the importance of fruits and vegetable in our diet.  The students created and enjoyed a vegetable salad made at this center.  Information about Arizona soil types and the plants that can be grown in Arizona were discussed in another center.  Farm equipment that is used on the farm was also talked about and viewed by the children. Aqua-culture was an interesting display.  We saw fish that were grown and sold as a cash crop on the farm.

Every grade level at Cielo is busy preparing for our Celebrate Learning Night May 1st. Many wonderful projects, both academic and artistic, will be on display in the classrooms and around the school.  We will also be having our annual Book Fair and a Charleston dinner for our Cielo families before and during the Celebrate Learning Night.

Kyrene de las Manitas

The All Day Kindergarten class presented an evening Story Night to family and friends.  The students recited the play "What's a Penny?" and used the paper mache piggy bank that they had made.   They helped the teacher read the book, Fiddle-I-Fee and did the motions and sounds.  The class sang the song, "The Barnyard Boogie."  Zero Hero visited for the 150th day of school.  He read a counting book, counted with the students to 150 and passed out a zero treat.  Learning and fun was combined for a fun evening for all.

Kyrene de la Mariposa

First grade students had a wonderful field trip at the Boyce Thompson Aboretum, where they explored many different types of plant and animal life.  Students in Deborah Sutherland, Andrea Rix'and Carrie Amberg's classes completed field guides and learned a lot about the Arizona landscape and environment.  Fouth grade students in Barbara Kostner, Patricia Brown, Angie Brigg and Bryan Raak's classes have been studying the human body and are working on exact models of themselves, with representations of each of the major systems in the body.  All Mariposa students are involved in "Turn Off TV Week" and are entered into a drawing for bookstore gift certificates when they turn off TV at home each night!

 Kyrene de la Mirada

Diane Duffy"s fifth grade logical reasoning class has created their own tessellations.  After researching tessellations on the Internet the students created their own design and colored it in.  You can see each student's creations at http://www.kyrene.org/staff/dduffy/ and go to "lego classes" and look for " 5th Grade Original Tessellations."   The fifth grade students in Kathi Crosby's class are studying vascular and nonvascular plants.  Students are bringing in samples of each type of plant.  Students in Debbie Ward's fifth grade class did an author's coffeehouse at the Celebration of Learning.  Students shared their own writing with their parents.

Kyrene del Norte

Fifth graders at Del Norte have been busy studying biomes, and The American Revolutionary Era, as well as drafting and editing autobiographies.   Mr. Larry Dexter visited them dressed in colonial revolutionary attire. He demonstrated and had available for display, many items used by the British and colonial militia.  The students enjoyed trying on the clothing and experiencing first hand how it would feel to be laden with their garb and equipment.   He presented an interesting and very informative program for the fifth graders.  They were given a whole new perspective of how soldiers lived and fought during the 1700's.  This week they will visit Biosphere II in Oracle to view the various environments of our universe.

Kyrene de la Paloma

Paloma kindergarten and first grade students are entertaining their parents this week with “informances” during their music classes.  “Informances” are presentations designed to both entertain parents and inform them about the wonderful things their children are learning in our music curriculum.  Our music teachers, Cheryl Allen and Rebekah Osborne, along with our kindergarten and first grade students are excited to have their families visit music classes this week and to demonstrate their skills and talents.

Kyrene del Sureño

The Traveling Lantern Theatre Company treated Kyrene del Sureño School to a presentation of Peter Pan.  Two actors in full period costume take on all the rolls.  Audience participation is encouraged and the students were invited to join in an occasional scene.  The actors gave an excellent and entertaining performance of 'Peter Pan' for the students.  Their creativity provided a positive role model for the children.
