Jesse McGuire sets the mood
with his trumpet for the
meeting of Tempe Old Timers. |
|
Old timers recall city's
past |
By Jonathan Cooper |
Hundreds of long-time Tempe
residents, a few dabbing at
tears as they reminisced,
stood patriotically at
attention and sang along
with God Bless America
to celebrate a tradition now
in its 96th
year. |

Consider
this scenario: One
sunny day you
discover that your
homeowners
association has
incurred a financial
liability in excess
of its ability to
pay, and that its
insurance policy
either covers
substantially less
of the amount owed
or does not cover it
at all. |

Kyrene Corridor residents with chess
skills that are slightly less than
tournament quality—or even utterly
nonexistent—now can improve their game
with the help of a champion chess mogul. |

Caitlin is on the
eighth grade
volleyball team at
Pueblo Middle
School. She is a
setter on the team
and is one of the
co-captains this
year. She leads the
team in service aces
and averages six
assists per match
(she only plays the
first and third
games). |

Some enjoyable macabre stuff has risen
from the pop-culture graveyard this
season in the form of DVD box sets, just
in time for creepy Halloween fun.

I normally think of myself as being very
comfortable in the kitchen.I mean, I
spend a lot of time there. I can
scramble eggs or chop onions or whisk
dressing — or all three — without giving
a lot of thought to it. |

Babies sleep in dimly
lighted nurseries,
tended by women who
cuddle and hum to
the ones that resist
sleep. In another
part of the
building, older
children are
attending preschool
and kindergarten
classes. Still other
children are playing
on the outdoor
playground, although
there is a small
indoor playground
available when the
weather is too hot. |

New skate park promises to draw Valley devotees |
As a youngster, Colby Carter fondly recalls gliding his skateboard through the malls at Arizona State University and jumping "ollie" tricks onto benches at various local high schools. He also has memories of being detained by the police at those same locations for having fun as a young skateboarder. |
