Unlike Joe Millionaire, Chandler racer is pure gold—with records to prove it

Like TV’s Joe Millionaire, Chandler resident Craig Treble was a construction worker once upon a time. But unlike Joe’s fraudulent fortune, Treble’s current glamorous identity is no put-on: He rides a Suzuki on the National Hot Rod Association’s Pro Stock circuit.

Treble got to show off a bit in front of the home town crowd the weekend of January 18 and 19, when he participated in the 2003 NHRA National Time Trails at Firebird International Raceway.

“It went awesome,” he says proudly, from a post-event celebration. “We got a 7.14 and a 7.15 [quarter-mile timings] on our two best passes. We ran within a tenth of a second of the national record...and we’re running on last year’s chassis and last year’s motor.”

Now in his mid-thirties, Treble has been riding pro stock motorcycles for more than a decade. In 1999 he scored his first major career victory when he defeated six-time NHRA champ Dave Schultz in Brainerd, Minnesota. In 2000 he competed in his first Holley Pro Stock Dominator Duel in Indianapolis. The same year he demonstrated his quick reflexes when he won the All Pro/Bumper to Bumper/Auto Value RT Challenge, with an average reaction time of .42874. He won the same event again the following year, with an even better time.

Treble, who is single, was introduced to bikes in his native Indiana, by his uncle. He spent years, starting at the age of 19, as a “bracket racer” before making the jump to his current event, in which he and his crew, called “Team Scream,” are currently ranked Number Two in the world.

“Number One is a girl,” he says, mock-bitterly. “Angel Savoir, from Louisiana. We beat her three out of five times we raced her, but nobody else can beat her. So we’re the Number One men in the world.”
