Tiles a thoughtful goodbye from departing principal

A tile mural featuring more than 700 self-portraits and handprints of students will be on display at C.I. Waggoner Elementary School during the school’s Academic Fair Night.

The mural is a farewell gift from Principal Julie Weimer, who will be retiring this year after 14 years as principal at Waggoner and 27 years with the Kyrene School District.

The work also features tiles listing the names of staff members, and individual tiles imprinted with the words parents used to describe the school during a recent parent survey.

Weimer contributed the funds for the tile project. Mobil-Exxon Corp. donated the costs of installation.

Weimer began her career at Kyrene as a teacher at Waggoner. She taught children in grades 1-3 as well as special-education students. She served 11 years at Kyrene de las Lomas Elementary School in Ahwatukee, where she was assistant principal, before returning to Waggoner as principal in 1987.

Waggoner’s Academic Fair is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 24. In to addition to the commemorative tile display, the event features student work completed this year and a PTO-sponsored book fair.

In addition to celebrating student efforts, classroom tours will allow parents and students to meet teachers and become familiar with expectations for the coming school year.

Students who will be new to Waggoner also are being invited to attend.
