Cub Scouts from Pack 118 led the
flag-raising ceremony in front of Kyrene
de la Paloma Elementary school Sept. 11,
followed by an assembly in the school
cafeteria.
“This is one of the ways these
boys serve their community and show
their patriotism in a very tangible
way,” said
David Hutchins,
a pack leader.
The entire student body of about
600 students and teachers watched as
Scott Boege and
Cody Selseth raised the flag. Following the
ceremony, student
James Hutchins
led the school in the pledge of
allegiance, and music teacher
Rebekah Osborne led the school in singing three
patriotic songs.
“These boys were very excited
about the honor they have been given and
rehearsed several times,” said Hutchins.
“We are so fortunate that
Gina Taylor, principal at Kyrene de la Paloma, has allowed us the honor
of providing this service.”
“Dr. Taylor recognized the
importance this day and set aside
assembly time to honor and remember
those who lost their lives in the
terrorist attacks of 2001,” said
Hutchins. “We appreciate her insight and
leadership in our school system.”
Pack 118 is chartered through St
Benedict’s Catholic Church and contains
about 75 boys from first through fifth
grades in several Kyrene schools.
It is at Paloma that they have
had the honor of serving as color guard
for this historic “day of remembering.”
There were many Pack 118 scouts
who participated in the ceremony.
Others included
Tyler Thompson,
Chris Baker, Christian Connor, Patric
Bjotvedt, Brandon Black, Mike Bruni,
Sean Hourihan, Drew Ketterman, Ryan
Olson, Christopher Roberts
and Damon Sanderson.
Tiger Cubs present were
Trey Brown, John Hutchins
and
Julien Lauman.
