Hospital program aims teens toward medical careers

Chandler Regional Hospital volunteer Sandy Spencer teaches weekly anatomy classes to 12 junior volunteers, including Corona del Sol High School students Priti Amin and Angela Wang.

Most of the students aspire to careers in the medical field.

“I will do anything I can to expand their horizons about medicine,” says Spencer.

According to hospital officials, Spencer’s goal was to introduce the volunteers to the concept of anatomy at a young age so they won’t find it difficult in the future.

She touches on different areas of anatomy and says she hopes to broaden the volunteers' perspective of the medical field and find the area that interests them the most.

She allows each student to learn at an individualized pace. It’s not a standard curriculum; there are no tests, quizzes, books or homework.

She prefers they don’t memorize the concepts, but learn what they can.
