Resident group announces recall movement
A newly formed group opposed to cuts in the Kyrene School District’s budget for music and physical education classes has announced plans to file a recall application next week against Board President Rae Waters.
The group reportedly was formed after the school board voted last month to lengthen the classroom time allocated for math, science, social studies and language arts, at the same time reducing the time spent on music and physical education.
In voting for the new schedule, Waters agreed with school administrators, who have said that budget cuts are required because of declining revenue.
Members of the opposition group, comprised of area citizens, say they disagree with the premise and have targeted Waters because she has refused to rescind her vote.
Two others on the five-member board, Sue Knudson and John Doney, sided with Waters on her vote, but neither has been targeted for recall.
The new budget will go into effect at the start of the 2005-06 school year.
