Olympic chance would be icing on his boy's cake

Once again, in this part of the world where “ice” is something over which we pour our tea, Fees Middle School 8th-grader Douglas Razzano has earned some icy distinction.

Last October Razzano won a gold medal in the Southwest Pacific Figure Skating Regional Championships—the first time a solo male had done so in many years—and secured a spot in the U.S. Figure Skating Association’s Junior Nationals in Lake Placid, N.Y. last month.

The result of this adventure?

Razzano, who is coached by former Olympian Doug Ladret, placed third in qualifying and third in his short program. He also placed fifth in the long program to secure a fourth place overall position in the Intermediate Men category—which, in that competition, earns a Pewter Medal.

Razzano’s proud dad, also named Doug, claims his son is the first solo male skater in Arizona history who has placed in the finals at this event, and that this accomplishment gives him “a number of new options,” such as international invitations.

Razzano the Younger makes no secret of his long-term dream: The Olympics.
