For Oktoberfest volunteers, it’s time to get ‘down and dirty’

Volunteers at Way Out West Oktoberfest get downright dirty—and have a great time doing it. Two volunteers run “hot” and “cold”—literally—with fire and ice.

Keenan Patrick, a database analyst, is among thousands of volunteers at the event, scheduled for his 31st annual run coming up soon at Tempe Beach Park.

After eight years of grilling, Patrick was promoted to “grill meister”, a position he has held since 2001.

In his role, Patrick and other volunteers will cook more than 27,000 bratwursts, 4,000 chicken breasts and 3,000 hot dogs.

He says it’s “a hot and dirty job” but one that keeps people coming back to the event each year.

Lisa Morley, a local artist, has been bestowed with the title Beloved Ice Queen, in charge of distributing 800 bags of ice to patrons.

“It’s hard work and I get dirty, but I’m always cool,” Morley says.

Volunteers are still needed and may offer their services by calling (480) 820-9049.

The event starts at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, with performances on main, family and polka stages. Activities end at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5.
