Brats, shirts, fun reward fest vols

Got time to spare the weekend of Oct. 1-3? If so, Way Out West Oktoberfest  wants you.

Kyrene Corridor residents are invited to help the sponsoring Tempe Sister Cities program raise money to support international student-teacher exchanges and humanitarian projects.

More than 2,000 volunteers are needed. Volunteers are asked to work four-hour shifts. Each will get a souvenir t-shirt, bratwurst and a beverage.

“We can always use more volunteers” said Mary Larsen, volunteer coordinator.

“There are lots of opportunities to help out and have fun, too.” Volunteers can manage arts and crafts and games in Kinderfest, help cook and serve bratwurst, work in the Safeway Oktobefest bakery, keep the festival grounds clear of trash or work at the silent auction.

This will be the 32nd year for the local Oktoberfest, one of the largest free events in the area.

Program funding this summer sent a 26-student delegation abroad, including the 500th delegate to benefit from Tempe Sister Cities fundraising.

If you can’t donate time, Sister Cities is also looking for items that can be sold at a silent auction.
