Corona athletes score among 50 schools at Invitationals

By Andy Feinberg

Corona del Sol High School was well represented at the 2005 edition of the Chandler Rotary Invitational Track Meet, held April 9 on a bright, windy day at Mesa Community College.

It marked the 65th time Chandler Rotarians have sponsored the competition. Teams from more than 50 schools covering three states attended the meet. Winner in the boys division, appropriately enough, was Chandler High, while the girls winner by a large margin was Desert Vista.

The meet produced several Corona highlights. The Corona boys 4 x 400 relay team placed third in its event, running its fastest time of the year, and in the process qualified for this year’s state meet.

The team was comprised of Blaine Irby, Dave Farrell, Aaron Kearns and Blaise Johnson. The boys 4 x 100 team (Kearns, Jared Mosley, Matt Mosley, Johnson) took fifth in its event, running the distance in 43.6 seconds.

Corona’s Ryan Kelly placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 145 feet 1 inch. Shawn Henderson missed out on placing by just seven 100ths of a second, running a great race in the 110-meter hurdles.

Corona’s Phil Feinberg took home first place in the high jump competition with a leap of 6 feet 8 inches. Overall in the boys division the Aztecs placed seventh, totaling 35 points.

The Corona girls had some great performances as well.

Katie Cartwright garnered third place in the 300-meter hurdles. Krissy Mikova tied for ninth place in the women’s high jump with a jump of four feet 10 inches. The girls 4 x 400 team (Paige Bau, Lindsey Dorweiler, Sara Adams and Katie Cartwright) placed seventh, adding two points to their team’s total.

While the upper classes battled away at the Rotary meet, on the other end of the Valley the Corona frosh took part in the Freshman Showcase at Cactus Shadows High.

At the premier meet for freshmen in the Valley, Corona’s Joey Kamper took first in the shot put with a toss of 41 2¾ inches. Austin Cartwright took fifth in the disc and Tiffany Summers took fourth in the girl’s high jump.

Lucas Starkey placed fifth in hurdles and sixth in high jump, while Jessica Williams took fourth in the 100-meter dash and eighth in the long jump.

Josh Walker took eighth in the 800-meter dash, and the girls 4 x 100 relay team (Emily Christman, Alexis Ulrich, Nicole Ethier and Jessica Williams) posted a seventh-place finish.

The Corona freshman boys wound up eighth overall and the girls 17th.
