Munchin' with Mom

It’s time once again to thank mom for all her labors of love and devotion. Of course, we know there is no present that would truly compensate for all those hours of: driving-shopping-listening-cleaning-schlepping-cooking, etc., but there are some that come close. Check out the following list of area restaurants that are ready to make mom queen for a day (or at least a few hours).

COFFEE GROUNDS, 5394 S. Lakeshore Drive, Tempe, (480) 820-0660

If it’s bucolic, graceful scenery you’re looking for; this is it. This restaurant is totally outdoors, overlooking a lake. There are ducks to gaze at, in addition to the occasional boat that drifts by. Spring is the perfect time to try this delightful eatery. Mother’s Day Brunch will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be carved ham and roast beef, chicken, eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, fresh fruit, baked goods.

MARCELLO’S PASTA GRILL, 1701 E. Warner Road, Tempe, (480) 831-0800

You want food like mamma used to make? Head over to family owned Marcello’s, where five generations have been in the restaurant business. Pictures of former New York City mayor of Ed Koch, Billy Joel, the Mets and Geraldine Ferraro adorn the walls, along with local celebs like Eddie Basha. For Mother’s Day, (from 2 to 9 p.m.), they’ll be serving specials like Veal Santibocca, Stuffed Lobster, Fish of the Day, Chicken/Shrimp Gondola, and homemade lasagne and canneloni.

This charming tea parlour and store will be serving “high tea” on Saturday, May 11. There will be live music--a violin player who will be playing classical and contemporary songs plus gifts for mom. The tea includes two types of tea sandwiches plus a savory. Also included are scones with preserves, lemon curd with devonshire cream, plus three types of sweets. After lunch, linger on and discover the beguiling collections of gifts and treasures. Price, including tax and gratuity is $25 per person.

JOHN HENRY’S, 909 E. Elliot Rd, Tempe, (480) 730-9009

Known for continental/Italian cuisine and sophisticated ambiance, John Henry’s restaurant will be providing specials for Mother’s Day and will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Specials will include items such as Lobster Bisque, Crab Poppers (Crab Cake, Smoked Gouda and Jalapeno lightly sautéed in garlic lemon butter), Halibut Paupiette, fresh catch of the day, veal/chicken Oscar, and Surf and Turf (Broiled 5 oz. Filet and succulent 6 oz. Lobster Tail).

Want a little live music as a side dish? Musician Jared Howe will be providing his special blend of blues, jazz and contemporary music between 6:30 and 10 p.m.

JILLY’S, 825 N. 54th St., Chandler, (480) 763-6909

If mom would like to try one of the newest, contemporary, urban restaurants in town, take her to Jilly’s sports restaurant. With 46 televisions, she won’t miss any action. Plus she’ll get to indulge herself with food choices from the egg station, carving station, raw bar, and hot/cold buffets. Mothers Day menu is served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Enjoy delectable dishes prepared by the resort’s highly acclaimed culinary staff, including omelettes, seafood, prime rib, ham and a desert station, at this historic landmark.
