Marcos group plans turnabout visit with German counterparts

Members of the Marcos de Niza High School orchestra will depart Oct. 10 for Regensburg, Germany, making a turnabout visit with their young counterparts who visited Tempe in August as part of the Sister Cities program.

The local group hosted 16 chamber orchestra students from Regensburg when the group visited Tempe last month.

The youngsters, from Albertus Magnus Gymnasium, went swimming, attended a Diamondbacks game, went shopping and participated in other activities over the Labor Day weekend.
The group included some who visited Tempe three years ago, making it an opportunity to renew old friendships as well as make new ones.

The highlight of the trip was a joint concert by both orchestras. The audience was treated to a night of music, ranging from Mozart to the Beatles and proving that music truly is the universal language.

Sponsoring Tempe Sister Cities hosted a farewell dinner for the students and the host families on Sept. 3.

Amid sad farewells, the visiting students left Tempe for the return home, but not without stopping first at the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas.

During its trip to Germany, the Marcos orchestra will perform in Regensburg and spend four days there before going on to London for four days.
