Run for fun -- and to help young athletes

The Kyrene Athletic Program will host its second annual 5K & Family Fun Run Saturday, May 11 at Kiwanis Park. The event includes a 5K run/walk, a 1-mile Fun Run, a ¼-mile dash, music, games, prizes and free food and drinks.

The event, open to all ages, drew more than 500 participants last year and raised $4,000 for the district’s athletic fund.

Registration information is available online at www.kyrene.org/communityed/athletics. Participants may also register from 6 to 7 a.m. the day of the event.

Fees are $7 for the ¼-mile dash, $10 for the fun run and $15 for the 5K run/walk. Proceeds will benefit the Kyrene Athletic Program. All participants will receive a commemorative race t-shirt.

More than 3,000 students in the Kyrene Corridor participated in the Kyrene Athletic Program during the 2000-2001 school year.

Kyrene Athletics is an after-school program that emphasizes participation, teamwork, leadership, skill development and sportsmanship.

Athletic opportunities include soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and field, wrestling, cross country running, cheer, softball and baseball.
