Cutty wins prestigious ‘Don Carlos’ recognition

Longtime community activist and Kyrene Corridor resident David Cutty has been named recipient of the 20th annual Don Carlos Humanitarian Award, to be presented by the Tempe Community Council during ceremonies in November.

Cutty, 51, has lived in Tempe since 1972. He is president and chief executive officer of TCH, the highly regarded local program for children and adult with disabilities.

Cutty received bachelors and masters degrees from Arizona State University. He and his wife, Rosetta, have been married for 27 years. They have three grown children.

According to the awards committee, Cutty has dedicated his life to removing barriers to independence for those with developmental disabilities.

Prior to his involvement with TCH, disabled Tempe residents lived outside the community circle. Today, thanks in large part to Cutty’s efforts, they are recognized for their significant contributions to the city’s diverse culture. TCH is acknowledged as one of the largest and most respected community service organizations in the state.

In his advocacy work, Cutty has been a member of the board of directors of both Tempe and Arizona ARCs. He served as president of the Arizona Association for People with Disabilities, vice president of the Student Council for Exceptional Children and a member of the Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities, among other affiliations.

He also has been an active member of Tempe Leadership, Valley Leadership, Tempe Community Council, Tempe Parks and Recreation Board, Sister Cities and American Red Cross.

Cutty is a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and has served as a Parish Council member and finance chair.

The Community Council award is named after Tempe’s founder, Charles Trumbull “Don Carlos” Hayden, and recognizes Tempe residents for outstanding humanitarian service over an extended period.

The award will be presented during a reception at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Arizona Historical Society Museum, 1300 N. College Age., Tempe. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served. The public is invited to attend. Cost is $20.
