Coyotes more common in area than thought

Some newcomers to the Kyrene Corridor may think that coyotes normally are found only in remote, mostly uninhabited desert environs.

In fact, that’s what prompted one astonished resident to send along a photo of a dead coyote she spotted three weeks ago in the underbrush near Elliot Road and McClintock. The photo appeared in the last issue of Wrangler News.

Now comes a longtime resident, who reports that sightings of coyotes have been a relatively common occurrence in the area since 1994 and before. That’s when many of them, inhabitants of the Motorola grounds, evidently were displaced by the construction of ASU Research Park.

They’ve been a common sight around the area ever since, say folks who know—another unfortunate victim of  urban sprawl.
