Childsplay theater performance puts focus on problem of childhood depression

On any given day, one in eight teenagers and one in 33 young children may experience childhood depression. Yet depression in young people is often overlooked.

The disorder can lead to social isolation, poor academic performance, strained family relationships and even suicide. In fact, a young person takes his or her life every hour and 45 minutes.

To educate the community about the warning signs of childhood depression and the resources available to children and their families, the Mental Health Association of Arizona will participate in Childhood Depression Awareness Day May 7.

Teaming up with Childsplay, MHA will offer a free evening performance of Eric & Elliot, a new play by Dwayne Hartford aimed at high school audiences.

The play tells the tale of a family struggling with the aftermath of suicide and their journey toward healing.

The play will be performed at 7 p.m. at the Tempe Performing Arts Center, 321 E. Sixth St.

Kyrene Corridor residents are invited to attend, though space is limited. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling the Childsplay box office at (480) 350-8101.

For information on childhood depression, call the Mental Health Association of Arizona, (480) 994-4407.
