Aspiring ASU journalist wins internship, grant

Wrangler News contributor Brian Gomez has been accepted for a 10-week summer journalism internship at the Lexington, Ken., Herald-Leader, beginning May 20.

To help finance his stay, he’ll receive a $2,500 grant and a $1,000 scholarship from the Scripps Howard Foundation.

Kyrene Corridor resident Gomez has contributed to Wrangler News since graduating from Corona del Sol High School in 2000.

Currently completing his sophomore year as a journalism major at Arizona State University, Gomez is sports editor of ASU’s independent morning daily newspaper, the State Press.

He covers the ASU men’s basketball team during the fall and spring semesters, and will continue to contribute to Wrangler News when he return to Tempe in the fall. He also plans to submit articles of community interest during his stay in Kentucky.
