Among students and teachers, the best of the best are due to receive a deserved round of applause—and some significant financial recognition—on Monday, March 26.
That’s when the Tempe Diablos’ 23rd annual Excellence in Education Awards are handed out teachers in the Tempe Elementary, Kyrene and Tempe Union High School districts for outstanding innovation in the classroom.
Teachers’ award entries must be submitted by midnight Monday, Feb. 6.
In a separate ceremony earlier in the day, the Diablos will award scholarships to high school students from the Tempe Union High School District to attend Arizona State University or a Maricopa County Community College.
The scholarships and awards to teachers and students total approximately $220,000, according to Diablo Bill Ottinger.
Keynote speaker at the awards event will be Gerda Weissmann Klein, a celebrated author, 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, Academy Award winner and Holocaust survivor.
Her message is one of inspiration and perseverance, that parallels the accomplishments of the awards recipients, according to Ottinger.
Chairman of the event is Gerald Deetz, Jr.
